Vermicelli Upma Recipe
It is a regular breakfast in the South Indian homes. This upma is made of vermicelli; mix vegetables like potatoes, peas, and other options like rava, oats and many others. People cook the vermicelli upma in different ways. Also, it tastes tasty, is lightweight and healthy and very easy to make. All you need to do is follow some easy steps and require a few ingredients. Below we provide you an easy recipe to make Vermicelli Upma at your home.

Ingredients for Vermicelli Upma
- Vermicelli- 1 cup
- Urad dal- 1 tablespoon
- Chana Dal- 1 tablespoon
- Potato- 1 medium sized
- Onion- 1 medium sized
- Green peas- ½ cup
- Cumin seed- ½ teaspoon
- Rai- ½ teaspoon (Mustard seeds)
- Hing- ¼ teaspoon
- Red chili powder- ½ teaspoon
- Turmeric powder- ½ teaspoon
- Garam Masala- ½ teaspoon
- Dhaniya powder- 1 teaspoon
- Dry mango powder (Amchoor)- ½ teaspoon
- Water- 1 ½ cups
Process of making Vermicelli Upma
Take 1 cup of unroasted vermicelli in a non-stick pan. Keep the flame on medium and the roasting of vermicelli might take 15 minutes. Just remember not to leave the vermicelli as it may get burned.
So, roast the vermicelli on medium flame until it becomes golden brown. You need to roast the vermicelli evenly.Once roasted keep the vermicelli aside.
Now take 1 medium sized potato, 1 onion and ½ cup of green peas and wash the vegetables and finely chop the potato and onion.
Take a non-stick pan and heat one tablespoon of oil in it.Add 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds, Mustard (rai) and hing. After the Mustard splutters then carry on the next step.
Add one tablespoon of urad dal and one tablespoon of chana dal.Then into it, add the finely chopped onions and potatoes, green peas into the pan and fry them.
Now add the spices into the pan- 1-teaspoon red chili powder, ½ teaspoon turmeric powder, and one-teaspoon salt or to taste, 1-teaspoon garam masala, one-teaspoon dhaniya powder, and ½ teaspoon of dry mango powder (Amchoor).Mix the ingredients well.
Fry them until the potatoes turn soft and onions light brown.After the vegetable is cooked completely, add 1 ½ cup of water into it.
About 2 minutes latter pour the roasted vermicelli into the pan and cook until the water gets soaked and the vermicelli cooked properly.
Remember that the upma need not to be completely dry. Cover the pan with a lid, switch off the flame and after five minutes take out the vermicelli upma into a bowl.
Tips and Variations
- You can also add peanuts in the vermicelli upma.
- All that you will need to do is, roast the peanuts and put it inside the pan along with the potatoes and onions.
- Instead of the dry mango powder you can also squeeze half lemon to add taste in the vermicelli upma.
- For some spicy touch you can also add finely chopped green chilies in the upma along with the vegetables.
Your vermicelli upma is ready to be served. You can also serve vermicelli upma with Mango tooku , pickle and namkeen above, it adds to the taste.
