How to Make Bhakarwadi

Bhakarwadi is one of the favorite snack of the Maharashtrians, but lesser known fact is that it is a Gujarati snack loved by all! Festival season is here and we are going to cook delicious snacks for our family members and guests. Instead of buying anything from outside which has mixed textures and can be harmful for your health, you can always cook the traditional snacks at home. Ans let me tell you snacks cooked by you are more delicious than any pizza or burgers from the shop.

So, today we bring to you a easy recipe of Bhakrwadi. Yes, did you ever thought you can make Bhakrwadi at home? But today, I will provide you an easy process that requires less of ingredients and one that will be loved by all.

Note: The ingredients used in the products are provided below. It is advised to go through the recipe to follow the proper process.

 Let’s see how to make Bhakrwadi
First we have to make Bhakrwadi dough:

Step 1: Take the cooking bowl, wash in a running water and clean it with dry cloth.Sieve ½ cup of maida and ½ cup of gram flour in a bowl.

Step 2: Add salt, 1 teaspoon turmeric powder, ½ teaspoon carom seeds and oil into the flour.Pour in some water in the bowl to make a dough

Step 3: Blend all the ingredients well with the fingers.Knead the flour and other ingredients into stiff dough.

Step 4: Ensure the dough is tight and hard enough. Apply some oil on the dough to maintain its moist. Use wet cotton piece and cover the dough for about 30 minutes.

Now we will make Bhakarwadi masala stuffing:

Step 1: Take out the cooking pan and heat it on a medium flame.

Step 2: Add 1 teaspoon poppy seeds and 1 teaspoon Sesame Seeds in the pan.Roast them well until you smell the nice aroma.

Step 3: Add ½ cup grated coconut in the pan and roast it further. Switch off the stove and transfer the mixture to mixer grinder.

Step 4: Add in ¼ teaspoon turmeric, ¾ teaspoon chilli, ½ teaspoon of coriander, ¼ teaspoon cumin powder and grind it well.

Step 5: Shift the stuffing to the cooking bowl from grinder. Add 1 tablespoon sugar, a small piece of chopped ginger, 1 chopped chilli, a pinch of asafoetida and salt. (to taste)

Step 6: Mix all the ingredients well to create an aromatic stuffing

Rolling bhakarwadi:

Step 1: Get back to the dough that we prepared earlier. Divide the dough into number of equally measured pieces.

Step 2: Meanwhile divide the stuffing in equal proportion.Take one dough piece and press it well with the hand.

Step 3: Place the dough piece on the rolling board and roll it with rolling pin.Ensure the thinness of the dough while rolling. Rub some water on the top of the rolled doughPick one of the portion of the stuffing from the bowl

Step 4: Spread the stuffing on the rolled dough evenly. Press the stuffing on the rolled dough to ensure it sticks well. Now pick the one side of the rolled dough and start rolling carefully. Ensure to roll the dough tightly and firmly

Step 5: Cut the rolled dough into equal pieces using sharp knife. Keep the cut pieces of rolled dough on the side

Frying Bhakarwadi:

Step 1: Bring out the cooking pan and place it on the stove.Add cooking oil generously into the cooking pan for frying. Heat the oil onto a medium flame until oil gets the frying heat.

Step 2: Drop the rolled dough pieces into oil and start frying. Fry dough pieces at a low flame until they turn golden brown.

Step 3: Remove the fried bhakarwadi from the pan and place it on dry paper. Let the oil drain completely from the bhakarwadi

Step 4: Now you can serve bhakarwadi hot or can let it cool and store it in vacuum tight box

What you need to make Bhakarwadi

  • Masala Stuffing:
  • ½ cup coconut
  • ¾ tsp chilli powder
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • ¼ tsp turmeric powder
  • ½ tsp dry mango powder
  • 1 tsp fennel seeds
  • ½ tsp coriander powder
  • ¼ tsp cumin powder
  • 1 tsp sesame seeds
  • ¼ tsp garam masala
  • 1 tsp poppy seeds
  • salt to taste


  • ½ cup maida
  • ½ cup besan
  • ¼ tsp red chilli powder
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • salt to taste
  • pinch of asafoetida
  • 2 tbsp hot oil
  • water as required
  • 1 tsp oil
Other essential ingredients:
  • ¼ cup maida
  • 3 tsp oil
  • oil for deep frying
