How to Make American Chop Suey
American Chop Suey is a flavorful Chinese version of popular American dish which is being prepared with stir-fried veggies, tart sauces, and crispy noodles. If you like chop suey then American chop suey makes a great pick to binge one and this American vegetable recipe can be easily found in many restaurant and street foods too.
It is a popular snack but you can also serve this dish as a One Meal Dinner or as a side dish with a Chinese feast, and it will be loved by both; kids as well as adults. Once in a while serving something different on the table makes a dining time cheerful. So, here is an easy Chinese recipe that can be made easily in an hour.

Ingredients for American chop suey
- Noodles, 150 grams
- Water, 4 cups
- Corn starch, 3-4 tablespoon
- Oil to deep fry
- Shredded Cabbage, ½ cup
- Finely chopped French beans, ½ cup
- Sliced capsicum, 1 medium
- Finely sliced carrot, ½ cup
- Finely chopped onion, 2 medium or Chopped spring onions, 1/4 cup
- Crushed garlic, 5-6 cloves
- Grated ginger, ½ inch
- Slit Green Chillies, 2
- Sesame oil, 1 tablespoon
- Tomato ketchup, 2-3 tablespoon
- Chilli sauce, 1/2 tablespoon
- Soy sauce, 1 tablespoon
- Sugar, ½ to 1 teaspoon or as per taste
- Vinegar, 1 tablespoon
- Black Pepper powder, 1/4 teaspoon
- Salt, as required
- Spring onion green or coriander leaves to garnish
Procoess of making American Chop Suey
In a saucepan or deep pan, take 4 cups water and heat it on medium flame.
Add salt as per taste, 1/4 teaspoon oil, and let it boil till rolling boil.
Add 150 grams noodles and lessen the flame. Make sure noodles are dipped in water and if not then use fork or spoon to press them into the water.
Cook noodles for 3-4 minutes until they are partially cooked. To check, you can taste few noodles and they should have a slight bite.
Now strain the water completely and rinse the noodles under fresh water. Do it carefully using a spoon.
Spread the noodles evenly on a large plate and let them cool at room temperature for 2 hours. Once noodles are cool down, add 2.5 tablespoon corn starch and mix well to coat noodles with corn starch.
Now take a deep pan or wok and add oil for deep frying over a medium flame.
Once you see fumes from oil, add few noodle strands to check whether the oil is hot enough or not. If the noodles come up then you can begin to fry noodles. When the oil is ready, fry noodles in batches to avoid sticking of them and as soon as you place noodles in oil, separate them using slotted spoon or fork.
Fry noodles till the color turns light golden at base side and then flip them to cook another side. Keep turning noodles couple of times till the color turns golden.
When the noodles turn crispy and golden, remove them from oil and place them on a kitchen towel or tissue paper to allow absorption of extra oil.
Once noodles are cooled at room temperature, pack them in an airtight container and keep them aside until the veg American Chop Suey sauce is being prepared.
Now, take all the mentioned vegetables and finely chop them.(Shredded Cabbage, ½ cup, Finely chopped French beans, ½ cup, Sliced capsicum, 1 medium, Finely sliced carrot, ½ cup, Finely chopped onion, 2 medium or Chopped spring onions, 1/4 cup).
Take 2-3 tablespoon tomato ketchup, 1/2 tablespoon chilli sauce, and 1 tablespoon soy sauce in a small bowl and mix them well using a spoon. Instead of soy sauce, you can use sriracha sauce.
Take another small bowl add 1.5 tablespoon corn starch and 1.5 tablespoon water and mix them well.
In a pan or a wok, heat 1 tbsp sesame oil. Keep a pan on medium flame and add 1/2 inch grated ginger and 5-7 finely chopped garlic cloves. Saute them until the raw smell of garlic and ginger is gone.
Add 2 medium finely chopped onions or 1/4 cup chopped spring onions. Increase the flame to high or medium and for a minute or so stir fry onions.
Now, add all the chopped veggies and mix well. Stir fry on a medium flame for 5 minutes. Reduce the flame and add the sauce mixture with veggies, and mix it well. Then add 1.5 cups water to veggies and mix well.
Get a bowl of corn starch, stir it, and then slowly add the corn starch in a stream in the veggies. Keeping stirring the veggies to avoid creation of lumps. If the lumps are formed then dissolve them using a wired whisk and stir the sauce.
Add salt to taste. Make sure to taste the gravy before adding salt, as the sauces already contain salt in them. Now, add 1/4 teaspoon black pepper powder and mix well. You can also use crushed black pepper instead of powder.
Reduce the flame to low and simmer the gravy for 2-3 minutes untill the sauce turns thick. The raw taste of corn shouldn’t be there. Next add 1 tbsp. vinegar and ½ to 1 teaspoon sugar. Mix all the ingredients well with gravy. You can add sugar as per your taste, but make sure to taste the gravy before adding more sugar.
Turn off the flame and keep the pan aside. Garnish the sauce with chopped spring onion greens or with coriander leaves.
Before making veg American Chop Suey, taste the salt, sugar, pepper, soy sauce in the gravy. Add more if required. Now take 3-4 serving bowls break fried noodles and keep them in bowls. If you want, you can keep the whole noodles in bowls to serve.
Pour the hot sauce over the noodles, as required.Garnish it with chopped coriander leaves or spring onion greens. American Chop Suey noodles are ready to eat.
Tips and Variations
- You can use any; whole wheat noodles, instant noodles, hakka noodles, or all-purpose flour noodles to make this recipe.
- If you don’t have sesame oil, you can use sunflower oil or peanut oil.
- White vinegar, apple cider vinegar, or rice vinegar; you can use any of these.
- Don’t forget to taste the gravy before adding more salt, black pepper, or sugar.
